Module Overview

Team Design Project Practice Project No.1, Heating Project

This module builds on the material covered in Heating Systems Engineering module in the second year of the programme. It practically examines the student’s ability to design commercial LPHW Heating Systems, with emphasis on how to select and layout plant and design primary and secondary distribution circuits and controls to provide acceptable indoor comfort conditions while minimising energy consumption for a particular project

(a) DESIGN WORK:

PROJECT PROGRAMME – Each team will produce an overall project programme which will be continuously updated and reviewed by the project tutors.

BUILDING VENTILATION RATE REQUIREMENTS – Selection of internal & external design conditions, calculation of ventilation supply and extract air volumes, zoning of air systems.

BUILDING THERMAL ANALYSIS – Selection of internal & external conditions, calculation of U-values, check for compliance against current building regulations, calculation of infiltration, fabric and total building heat losses.

OPTIMUM HEATING SYSTEM CHOICE – The appropriate heating system type is chosen based on the above and with a view to minimising energy consumption.

DETAIL DESIGN CALCULATIONS – heat emitter/boiler sizing/selection and layout, Design of LPHW distribution circuits, pipe and pump sizing calculations etc.

(b) PRODUCTION OF DESIGN DOCUMENTATION:

ENGINEERING DESIGN DRAWINGS – Production of heating schematic, distribution pipework floor/boiler house plan layouts and section using a combination of manual & CAD drawing aids.

TECHNICAL DESIGN CALCULATION FILE – All design calculations to be included in a design file.

PROJECT REPORT – A report is required which outlines a summary of the system design loads and the design rationale behind the selection and design of the LPHW heating system and components for the building.

NOTE: EVERY ELEMENT OF DESIGN WORK COMPLETED BY EACH TEAM MEMBER MUST BE INCLUDED/IDENTIFIED AND DATED ON EVERY PIECE OF THE FINAL DESIGN DOCUMENTATION SUBMITTED TO THE PROJECT TUTORS

The students will use the set of scaled architectural floor plans and sections of a building given out to them for the heating project in semester 1 and design the ventilations systems for this building type. A detailed design brief for a proposed ventilation system will be given to each student. This design brief clearly defines the deliverables required by each student, the project start and finish date along with a marking scheme. The students are broken up into various design TEAMS of 4 – 6 students depending on the class size. During the scheduled 3 - hour weekly project design classes the students on an individual or group basis can address/discuss various design issues arising in their design of a ventilation system for a particular building and seek guidance from the project tutor in attendance. Progress will be monitored by the project tutors on an ongoing basis for the duration of the project. Note: It is envisaged that additional work/research and study/reading outside of the scheduled class time will be required by the students to complete the project with the project deadline
