The module cultivates a creative approach to problem-solving, giving learners the confidence, mindset, skills and tools to apply Design Thinking methods to solve business, environmental and social problems. Through human-centered discovery and research, learners will learn how to uncover, define, and frame problems. Through the facilitation, collaboration and application of ideation techniques, they will co-create solutions to real problems, bringing them to life through prototyping, validating their effectiveness using evaluation techniques and communicating their conclusions in a variety of contexts.
Introduction to Design Thinking
An introduction to the Design Thinking mindset and how it relates to creative problem-solving and innovation.
Human-centered Research
Research methods to identify and discover what people really need, for example, interviews, jobs to be done, contextual inquiry, diary studies and field studies. Systhesising insights through techniques like problem definition, personas, empathy mapping and journey mapping.
Human-centered Design
Convergent and divergent thinking to generate ideas that push past the obvious and get to breakthrough solutions, for example, brainstorming, mind-mapping, brainwriting, SCAMPER, analogies, storyboarding, provocation, business model canvas and press release. Facilitating effective decision-making and prioritisation of ideas.
Prototyping Solutions
Development of prototypes using a variety of materials and techniques. Using storytelling to communicate and present prototype solutions.
Solution Evaluation
Evaluation and validation techniques examining the suitability, usability, and sustainability of solutions through critique, testing, critical analysis, impact analysis and reflection.
Case Studies
Examination and discussion of key case studies related to innovation and design successes and failures.
