On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to engage in contemporary debate about the importance of school age care provision. They will engage with important debates such as quality of service provision, an understanding of middle age child development, the importance of play for the older child, the context of education provision in primary schools and the complexity of roles and relationships in an out of school environment.
Child Development
Developmentally appropriate activities to meet the holistic needs of the child using playful activities. Middle age child development for children aged 5-12 years.
Quality
International models and frameworks of quality. Children’s spaces -Environment-physical, psychological and social - Policies and procedures for school age care settings - Provision for diversity, gender, equality, language, culture, ability - Working with specialist groups of children, disability, foster children, travelling community, resilience - Ecological perspective. United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Child's right to participate (Article 12) and rest, play and leisure (Article 31) .
Play
Importance of play in SAC (indoor and outdoor) - UNCRC Article 12 and 31 - Theories of play - Planning activities - including children’s voice and age- appropriate activities/ curriculum - Risky play/Risk Assessment.
Education
Primary school curriculum - The organisation of learning and the primary school curriculum -challenges of curriculum overload. Helping children with homework - strategies and good practice. Importance of the creative arts in SAC.
Relationships
Roles and relationships within school age childcare - Working with parents- service meeting parents or child’s need? - Relationships with young persons - balancing individual v group needs - Relationships with others - Skills needed by an educator to promoting inclusive practice and critical reflection - Inter age relationships.
Students will engage in two one hour lectures and one hour tutorial per week.
