Collaborating with Family and Communities

This module aims to give the learner opportunities to critically reflect, engage and advocate for meaningful participatory and proactive relationships with children, colleagues, families and other relevant stakeholders while also applying purposeful partnership strategies and linking theory with practice. Learners will lead and evaluate the development of policies, procedures and organisational documentation in early years across a range of settings. They will identify the challenges in advocating for the development of the community of practice through the development of respectful collaborative practices that support democratic, inclusive and anti-bias approach to education and promote democratic engagement within a variety of value systems.

Partnership strategies

Practice principles of family support including prevention & early intervention, working in partnership, strengths-based approach. Prevention and Early Intervention in children and young people’s services: Ten Years of Learning. On the right track: Learning from investment in Prevention and Early Intervention in Ireland.

Policies, procedures and organisational documentation in early years

Building meaningful relationships with children and families. Whole family assessment. The assessment wheel. Evidence based statements to support parents in their parenting role. Hardiker model. Practice frameworks, including Meitheal and Signs of Safety and Marte Meo. Policies and practice frameworks relevant to family work.

Lead and advocate for a democratic, inclusive and democratic approach.

Attitudes and values; supporting diverse families to feel valued; adopting inclusive and anti-bias approaches to ECEC. Evaluating work with families and communities.

Communicate, lead and advocate for community of practice

Intergenerational Learning and its role in ECEC settings and the community. Together Old and New (TOY) project. Children’s engagement with the wider community.

Collaborative practices

Respectful collaborative practices promoting democratic engagement within a variety of value systems. Supporting the rights and needs of children and families. Drawing on evidence based and evidence informed practice to support the development of professional collaborative relationships with families.

Students will receive three lectures per week and engage in self-directed learning.
