This module will allow students to further develop their understanding of children’s development from 0-12 years. The emphasis on cognitive, socio emotional and moral development will explore the developmental stages from a range of psychological perspectives with an emphasis on the implications of learning in early childcare settings.
Cognitive Development
Main cognitive developmental milestones.Language development.Key Psychological Perspectives: Piaget, Vygotsky, Bruner.
Socio-Emotional Development
Development of relationships (peer and family relationships), age differences, impact on play and learning, individual differences (shy children, peer groups etc), family and professionals role in supporting social development.Emotional development through childhood, developing emotional literacy, temperament and the environment.
Moral Development
Key theoretical perspectives: Piaget & KohlbergApplication of theories and critique (e.g Gilligan)
Development of Self and Gender
Nature Vs Nurture, the role of the family and the environment, the development of self across ages, the role of peers and culture.
Prosocial and positive behaviour development
Managing the early childhood environment, link to communication and development of emotions, moral development and social skills. Individual differences and the development of pro social behaviour and empathy.
