Early Childhood Curriculum

This module builds on the brief introduction to curriculum presented in first year, by examining a variety of national and international early years curricula approaches paying particular attention to the way in which curriculum permeates all organised activities undertaken in early years learning environments. This module particularly focuses on Aistear, the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework, Siolta, the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and the Aistear Siolta Practice Guide. Students will examine the principles and themes and the guidelines for good practice outlined in Aistear. Students will focus on the four elements of the Curriculum Foundations and six Curriculum Pillars outlined in the Aistear Síolta Practice Guide. As well as focusing in workshops on the way in which Aistear and the practice guide can be applied in practice settings, Students will build on their knowledge of curriculum though engaging with the issue of curriculum planning.
