Module Overview

Psychology and Learning in Early Childhood

This module aims to develop students’ understanding of children’s diverse abilities at different stages of childhood development and the need to develop individualised learning goals for each child at each of those stages. Students will explore the link between children’s diverse needs and the learning environment. The module will allow students to begin to develop the skills to allow them to work inclusively and effectively as a multi-professional team in order to advocate for the children they are working with.

Cognitive Development

Normative cognitive developmental milestones. Language development. Key Psychological Perspectives: Piaget, Vygotsky, Bruner. Lifespan perspectives on cognitive development during childhood.

Observation assessment and planning

Assessing development and learning-Atypical development and theoretical perspectives-assessment methods (National and International models)

Autism and pervasive developmental disorders.

Autistic Spectrun Disorders-definition , presentation and assessment-interventions building on abilities-introduction to the key tenets of neurodiversity in relation to autism.

Sensory & Physical Disabilities

-Definition , presentation and assessment-Planning and developing interventions-Universal Design Principles

Specific Learning Difficulty(SPLD)

-Dyslexia and Dyspraxia-Definition , presentation and assessment-planning and developing interventions-Minimising stigma and maximising empowerment.

Inclusive Learning Environments

Teaching and learning within this module will involve lectures and workshops/tutorials focusing on the application of theory to practice. Students will be encouraged to work within groups of peers to reflect on learning from placement to apply to the models outlined. .
