Creative Group Facilitation

Within this programme students will learn how to plan and facilitate drama, movement, art and music workshops to develop young children’s social, cognitive and language skills. Students will develop an appreciation of the importance of language in the growth of children’s understanding, and will explore literature written specifically for children. They will learn how to incorporate a diverse range of children’s books and other drama material and devices into effective session planning, delivery and evaluation. Connections will be made to Síolta (2006) and Aistear (2009).

Drama and movement:

The uses and benefits of dramatic conventions in effective childhood education:Images; Games; Teacher in Role; Hot Seating; Mantle of the Expert.

Creative Session Planning (Design & Preparation)

Current policy and practice frameworks in an early year’s context in relation to appropriate planning and design.Group needs assessment (including different learning styles).The role of games for group facilitation and the further development of creative skills, generating ideas, stimulating imaginations.

Evaluation:

Establishing a framework for effective early childhood care and development teaching and learning.Devising methods of observing children during session.Identifying progress made through the arts in children’s social, cognitive and linguistic development.Engaging in successful self and peer evaluation.

 

Lectures, tutorials, collaborative/group work, facilitation, demonstrations, group discussion, creative activities - including arts based practice.
