Research Methods in Early Years

The aim of this module is to introduce students to research methods utilised in the area of early childhood education and care, with a particular focus on child-centred research methodologies. Students will develop proficiencies in the early years' research through the acquisition of knowledge and skills required to manage and carry out a research project from beginning to end. An analysis of ethical issues pertaining to research will ensure that students understand the role of values and ethics when conducting research in the early years' sector.

Introduction to Research

Qualitative Methods

Observation­ Ethnographic observation,­ Participant observation,­ Multi-media observations,Qualitative Interviewing,­ Interviewing children,­ Children as researchers,­ Using structured activities as a research tool,Creative listening to young children,The Mosaic Approach,Case studies,Reliability and validity of child-centred research methodologies

Quantitative Methods

Ethics and values in early childhood research

­ Ethical Issues in researching children’s lives,­ Legislation,­ Participatory Rights of Children,­ Child Protection,­ Relationship with research participants,­ Ethical costs and benefits of research,­ Procedural issues
