This module introduces the learner to basic electrical measurements and the fundamentals of electronic circuit theory.
Basic Electrical Quantities and Instrumentation
Introduction to DC electrical measurements, DC current and Voltage. The ammeter, voltmeter and multi-meter, their use as measurement tools. The resistor in a DC circuit and Ohm's Law. Resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistance.
DC Circuit Theory
Resistive circuits. Resistors in series/parallel. The Wheatstone Bridge. Voltage and current divider rules. Power and energy in a resistive circuit. Maximum power transferred to a load resistor. Negative voltages and currents.
Network Theorems
Kirchoff's Voltage and Current Laws. The Superposition Theorem, Thevenin's Theorem for simplifying DC analysis. Loop Current Analysis and multi-source circuits.
Other Passive Devices in DC circuits
The Capacitor and Inductor in a DC network. Charging and discharging curves for the capacitor and inductor in a DC circuit.
The module is delivered through a series of lectures, laboratory activities as well as student self-directed learning including assessment activities.
