This module examines the key issues involved in the delivery of training and development programmes via e-learning. It addresses the challenges of selecting, designing and implementing e-learning programmes and highlights the need for organisations to adopt a strategic approach to ensure e-learning is effective.

Introduction to E-Learning:

Definitions of e-learning; growth of e-learning in the work place; impact of new media on the delivery of training; recent developments and trends in the e-learning field; the e-learning industry in Ireland.

E-Learning Design and Development:

E-learning and pedagogy; cognitive learning theory; instructional design principles; Gagné’s instructional strategy; Bloom’s taxonomy of learning objectives; the engagement matrix; knowledge construction; personalised learning; social and informal learning; e-portfolios; competency modelling & content development; performance assessment.

Learning Strategy:

Developing an e-learning strategy in an organisation; business drivers; role of stakeholders; organisational culture; identifying strategic factors; the e-learning infrastructure; current and emerging e-learning standards.

Evaluation of E-Learning:

Evaluation models for e-learning; defining costs; Return On Investment (ROI).
