IP Protocols and standards
Review of TCP/IP model and protocol suite. IPv4 and IPv6 services and addressing. IP Routing. TCP and UDP operation and services. Internet regulation and standards processes -- ISOC, IETF, IANA, RFC process.
Cellular Networks
GSM, LTE. Network structure. All IP cellular network. Role of 3GPP, standardisation and regulatory bodies. RF system components, RF propagation, RF standards and regulations.
Wireless LANs
Types of wireless LANs, wireless LAN components, network infrastructure components, introduction to IEEE 802.11 and related standards, MAC layer, physical layer, planning a wireless LAN deployment, performance and roaming considerations.WiFi: BSS and iBSS modes. ESS and Distribution systems. Wireless Network Security and Privacy. Interoperating with wired networks. Regulation, ISM bands.
Network Analysis
Use Wireshark to perform packet inspection and traffic analysis.
Wireless Personal Area Networks
IEEE 802.15.1: Bluetooth, specification, network configurations, applications.IEEE 802.15.4: introduction to Zigbee, specification, system architectures, network topologies, applications.
The module is delivered through a series of lectures, laboratory activities as well as student self-directed learning including work on assessments.
