The module introduces students to the principles and techniques of comunication and design in the engineering environment
Communications:
One to one communication: attitudes and expectations: Communication and culture. Active lsitening. Barriers to communication, non-verbal comunication.
Presentation:
Giving a presentatoon, public speaking, audinec, task, preparation, organisation of material, presentation skills, visual aids, grapical communications, pie chart, histograms, handling questions.
Meetings:
Committees and meetings: particiants, representative, delegate, observer, consultant, secretary,minute taker, Chair. What can go wrong? Handling conflict.
Writing Skills: Structured engineering reports
Social & Business:
Introduction to marketing, money, manpower. Sorces of Irish Law, the Courts.Introduction to world of business with hands on experience of preparing accounts.
Design:
Breif history oof design, the changing nature of design, special considerations in design. Quality and responsibility in the design process.
Instruction is by means of lectures and coursework assignments over two semesters with 2 hours class contact per week. The assignments are designed to closely follow the lecture material and to assist in developing the student’s confidence and understanding.
