Physical Activity and Metabolic Health

The module aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the role played by exercise in health, fitness and wellbeing. In this module we will examine the health benefits of exercise. The main aims of this module are to; (i) Discuss the relationship between physical activity and Health and Fitness, (ii) Discuss the impact of physical activity on morbidity, longevity, and quality of life, (iii) Describe the need for physical activity throughout the life cycle (iv) Identify the risk factors associated with chronic disease and examine the role played by exercise and physical activity in their prevention or offset, (v) Discuss the role of exercise in weight management for health and fitness. This module will be delivered though lectures, and workshop programmes.

Health Screening

Body Composition Analysis; Body Mass Index (BMI); Weight Management; Sub-maximal exercise testing, blood chemistry profiling, blood glucose; Life Stage Analysis; Genetic Health Risk Assessment; Practical Applications.

Exercise for Health:

Exercise objectives; Relationship between exercise and the wellbeing; Aerobic and Anaerobic exercises and their contributions to health, wellness, and physical fitness; Risks associated with exercise (during and after exercise).

Exercise and Musculoskeletal Disorders:

Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis – the relationship between physical activity and bone mass; epidemiologic studies; management of skeletal health. Back Pain - exercise, rationales, and physiologic considerations; clinical trails of exercise regimens; clinical recommendations

Exercise and Metabollic Disorders:

Exercise and Obesity - the role of exercise in calorie balance, exercise as prevention/therapy, current recommendations for exercise in obesity management. The role of Exercise in the Management of Diabetes Mellitus - glucose, and insulin; effects of physical training; clinical recommendations. The Role of Exercise in the Control of Lipid and Lipoprotein Levels – Lipid levels, lipoproteins and Lipoprotein metabolism; mechanisms of action of exercise in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism clinical applications of exercise in dyslejsidemia.

Current Research and Developments:

Examination of the current publications and research in the area of exercise for health and fitness.

PRACTICAL WORKSHOP TOPICS:

A series of practical workshops will be organised covering a number of key areas of Exercise for Health and Fitness. These practical workshops will examine such areas as; Exercise for Health, Musculoskeletal function, Assessment of Metabolic Function and Weight Management.

Methods used to achieve the module learning outcomes will include lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, interpretation of data, case studies, problem-solving exercises, video presentations, self-directed learning and computer-based learning.
