Experiential Learning

The aims of the component are to:Offer the student the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained in their course of study in an industrial work-place setting.Facilitate the student in developing the practical competencies and communication skills necessary to function as an effective team member in the work environment.Note:The module will be assessed by 100% continuous assessment and graded on a pass/fail basis

Work Experience

The student will either have completed: (a)Attained a suitable work placement position for the course of study being taken. (b)Not successful in attaining a suitable work placement position. For (a), the student will be assigned an Industry Mentor and Academic Tutor. The student will carry out the duties assigned by the work placement employer. The student will work in a team based environment. The day to day monitoring of the student’s progress and performance as an employee is the responsibility of the Industry Mentor. Significant issues can be related back to the Academic Tutor. The Academic Tutor will visit the student in hisher place of work. While on work placement, the student through reflective practice will document the learning they have achieved and the skills and knowledge they have put into practice. Further details can be found in the department's "Work Placement Guidelines" document. For (b), the student will be assigned an Academic Tutor. The student will have to complete and write-up a series of exercises/assignments designed to simulate the work environment. The student may follow agreed IT certifications and college modules as part of this options. During this process, the student through reflective practice will document the learning they have achieved and the skills and knowledge they have put into practice.
