Module Overview

Thermal Insulation, Cladding and Fabrication Technology

The module on Thermal Insulation, Cladding and Fabrication Technology is designed to introduce the student learners to the workshop environment and to some common practices employed within the building services engineering industry. The learners will experience common materials used in the fields of Ventilation, Air-conditioning, Plumbing and Heating. In addition they will experience the materials commonly utilised in the thermal insulation and cladding of these. They will fabricate, insulate and clad simple Heating Ventilation and Air-conditioning duct sections, and a simple Plumbing pipe-work arrangement. During the module the learners will have the opportunity to have a practical engagement with the pattern layout, fabrication and assembly techniques that are common within the building services industry.

This module will allow learners the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the skills needed to fabricate, assemble, thermally insulate and clad projects associated with the building services engineering industry.

Introduction to health and safety within the workshop environment. Identification of risks associated with the materials used and workshop equipment. Safe handling of the materials machinery and tools used and safe working practices.

Materials:

Introduction to and exploration of the properties of Aluminium’s, Low-carbon Steels, Stainless Steels, Copper and Brass. Identification of a variety of the common forms of thermal insulation material.

Drawings and Pattern Layouts:

Development of drawing interpretation skills. Use of appropriate equipment to develop and layout patterns onto paper and material sheets.

Fabrication Techniques;

Experience mechanical and manual cutting equipment, folding and bending equipment, bending rolls, use of mechanical fastening techniques associated with the HVAC and plumbing industries and industry appropriate forming/jointing techniques.

Assembly:

Assemble insulation and cladding of simple HVAC/Plumbing arrays using appropriate equipment and various jointing techniques. Experience the use of spot welding techniques, brazed, soldered and welded joints where appropriate.

Each module session will be of two hours duration. The module will be delivered within the laboratory environment. Delivery will be by use of laboratory exercises, practical demonstrations and lectures. The learners will be assigned activities and content related to the tutorials to be completed as self directed learning.
