Introduction to French-English Professional Translation

Students taking this module require to have passed all French language modules in Years 1 and 2 of the programme. Students who have not spent their year abroad in a French-speaking country may take this module provided their language skills are at B2 on the CEFR overall.

This module builds on the knowledge, experience and linguistic competence acquired by students during their previous study. The module provides an introduction to Translation as a professional activity with a focus on discourse control and professional text production standards, underpinned by an understanding of some key concepts from the discipline of Translation Studies. It provides students with the opportunity to develop their French language and Translation skills through a range of focussed translation tasks in a variety of contexts with a national, international and/or intercultural dimension.

The aims of this module are:

• To introduce students to some key concepts from the discipline of Translation Studies.

• To deepen awareness of cultural differences between French-speaking countries and their own, particularly with reference to professional settings.

• To expand students’ appreciation of discourse control, register and professional text production standards.

• To provide students with opportunities to practice translation.

• To enhance students’ critical and analytical thinking skills.

• To provide students with a stimulating and supportive environment in which they can develop their French language and translation skills.

Successful completion of this module requires Reading Skills in French at a minimum of C1.1 on the CEFR; it also requires Writing Skills in English at C2.1 Level on the CEFR.

A range of teaching and learning approaches will be used in the delivery of this module including:  translation workshops, individual and group translations.

E-learning will be incorporated into the module as much as possible.
