Module Overview

Game Design 1

This module forms a practical introduction to the core concepts of game design. In each class, a

concept is introduced and discussed with real game examples. Then the students are given a

design challenge that explores the concept and they work in teams to design, build and test

board games that fits the challenge. Finally, the games created are discussed and the teams share

what they have learnt.

Over the course of the semester, students will also be designing their own original game from

scratch. Every 2 – 3 weeks they will present an update on their progress in a specific area.

The purpose of this module is to give the students hands on experience with the core principles

of game design, while deepening their understanding of the elemental composition of a game. It

is an introductory module to the field of game design.
