This module builds on the work of Game Design 1, exploring more advanced game design
challenges and topics. The class structure will remain the same. A concept is introduced and
discussed with real game examples. Then the students are given a design challenge that explores
the concept and they work in teams to design, build and test a board games that fits the challenge.
The learning outcomes are then discussed as a class.
Over the course of the semester, students will design an original game from scratch. This game
must express a deep design of complex and contain elegant interlocking systems rather than simple
gameplay. The students will present updates on their work every 2 – 3 weeks.
This is an intermediate module designed to give the students deeper experience with more more
advanced concepts of game design.
Introduction to advanced game design
More complex and varied game design methodologies will be studied and analysed
Game Economies
The theories and concepts behind designing a functional and stable game economies for large playercounts or in singleplayer worlds
Game Theory
The study of player-player interaction and how hidden information and cooperation results in different outcomes
Social Games
Analysis of large playercount games that involve social deduction, social interaction and social collaboration.
Folk Games
Traditional and non-digital games passed down through the ages
Level design
• Approaches to level design• Encounter design• Environmental storytelling
Documentation
• Game Design Documents• 1 Page Designs• Advanced Pit
The module will be delivered as a short lecture followed by a practical exercise. This will be
followed by a group discussion to reinforce the learning from this exercise. The majority or the
student learning will take place within the practical exercises, for which the lectures serve to
contextualise.
