Module Overview

Business & Distribution of Games

This module will give students an understanding of the modern computer games industry, and the business decisions required at three key points in the development cycle. Pre-production considerations will focus on company incorporation, data protection/privacy/ legal compliance, preparation of a business and marketing plan, the role of market research and investment. In development considerations will focus on how marketing, communications, public relations and social communications can be used to build awareness of a game. Post-release considerations will look at the role of metrics, conversion rates and monetisation, and introduce students to practical  considerations such as customer support, billing, the feedback loop and how to understand data to make game design decisions.

The module uses a combination of lectures, discussions, workshops, and self-directed learning which is supplemented by peer and tutor support. A series of lectures/workshops will be held on topics relating to the module.

Industry guest speakers will give talks and presentation in their respective fields.
