The module introduces students to a wide range of 20th century literary texts and theories. It includes theoretical debates relevant to the study of contemporary literature. Building on a broad appreciation and knowledge of literature, culture and film in German-speaking countries, learners will choose an area of specialisation that is innovative, independent and critical in nature.
The first part of the course will focus on critical readings while the second part will apply this theory of criticism to specific texts.
The aims of this module are to:
- Provide students with the theoretical and critical knowledge necessary to engage in independent research
- Analyse literary creativity from a variety of critical perspectives and to apply these concepts to a number of texts representative of key theoretical debates
- Afford learners the opportunity to apply their critical skills to a short individual research project
- New trends in literature and literary criticism.
- Modernism, post-modernism, critical theory, women’s studies, cultural theory and other trends in literary criticism
- Vergangenheitsbewältigung (coming to terms with the [Nazi and GDR] past).

The class will be delivered through a mixture of lectures and seminars / tutorials. Adequate lecture and seminar / tutorial preparation should involve approximately two hours of private study per one hour of class.
