Module Overview

Applied Learning in the Workplace

Placements are an integral aspect of preparing learners for a career in industry or business. Placements provide learners with a structured method of combining academic education with practical work experience. This work placement module provides learners with experience of a business/industry setting, related to their programme of study. Learners will gain first-hand experience of the operations of the business or industry they are placed in, and the knowledge and skills required in such a role.
Through placement they will gain the opportunity to apply and use, in a practical setting, the knowledge, know-how and competence imparted in the academic modules of their programme.
Learners are expected to become involved in a range of work activities carried out by the work placement organisation and get practical experience of the business. The placement should be chosen/selected such that it allows the learner to carry out a role related to their field of study.

Structure of the Placement

It is intended that this placement should run for a minimum of 4 days per week for 8 calendar months, typically from September to April. Each learner will have an industrial/business supervisor and an academic supervisor. As part of the process of establishing a placement, the Institute and the employer will agree a set of job specifications for the position and against which the learner will later be assessed. The academic supervisor will undertake at least one pre-arranged visit to each learner in the work place during the course of the placement. These three-way meetings, between the learner, the workplace supervisor and the placement Coordinator, provides a formal opportunity to: A. Review the placement in the context of the original learning objectives as outlined in the placement contract; B. Identify the positive aspects of the placement; C. Consider areas for further development. In addition, the academic supervisor will contact the learner and the industrial supervisor on a fortnightly basis to review progress. In order to support the work placement a placement handbook will be developed which clearly sets out the responsibilities of the learner, the employer and the Institute with regard to the work placement.

Placement Handbook

In order to support the work placement, a placement handbook will be developed which clearly sets out the responsibilities of the learner, the employer and the institute with regard to the student and the work placement.
