Upon completion of this module students will be able to use their knowledge of industrial process heating systems and components to the carry out a thermodynamic analysis of these systems.

Heat Loss calculations

Evaluation of 'U' values and overall heat loss from buildings. Hot water requirements and sizing calculations. degress days and the calculation of annual heating demand

Space heating systems

Layout and functioning of domestic and commercial space heating systems. Hot water, air and radiant type systems. Components of space heating systems, boilers, pumps, valves, and other fittings. Heat emitters: radiators, convectors both natural draught and forced draught, heated floors, walls and other surfaces calorifiers and hot water production

Heating system calculations

Selection and sizing of of heat emitters, boilers, pumps and distribution piping.

Steam process plant

Layout and functioning of same. Elements of process steam plant, boilers, pipe-work, heat exchangers, steam trapping and condensate recovery. Safety and maintenance issues, water treatment, blow-down and statutory inspections. Efficient operation of process steam plant

Combustion

Boilers and combustion equipment for oil, gas and solid fuels in detail. Calorific value of fuels, combustion calculations, products of combustion and energy balances for boilers
