INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Definitions of innovation and entrepreneurship and the contrast between innovation and invention. The importance of innovation and a profile of entrepreneurs in the computing industry.

SYSTEMATIC INNOVATION

The main sources for innovative opportunity and the principles of innovation. The characteristics of successful entrepreneurial businesses.

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

The tools and techniques of lateral thinking for idea generation will be explored and practised. The key stages in new product development process will be examined. Issues relating to intellectual property rights.

MANAGING NEW TECHNOLOGY-BASED FIRMS

Management theories and organizational culture will be discussed. Issues relating to managing teams, managing technological innovation and knowledge management. A range of entrepreneurial strategies for adoption in the marketplace will also be investigated.

STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

The process of formulating a business plan, business financing, business legal structures and sources of assistance for new businesses.
