Module Aims: - To provide non-native speakers of English with the knowledge and skills to enable them to perform successfully in an English-language academic context. - To develop students’ knowledge of academic vocabulary. - To develop reading and writing skills including a focus on grammatical form. - To introduce students to the structure of English-medium tertiary education.
Writing
Analysis of the features of academic writing; Planning essays; Paragraphs; Introductions/conclusions; Referencing and bibliographies; Paraphrasing and summarising; Nominalisation in academic writing.
Reading
Gisting and skimming; Extracting detailed information from an academic text; Using context to identify meaning.
Speaking
Pronunciation work; Making a presentation; Seminar and tutorial skills.
Listening
Listening to lectures; Listening to the main points and listening for gist.
Grammar
Review of all tenses; ‘simple’ prepositions; articles; link words; adjectives and adverbs; questions; comparing and contrasting.
