Module Overview

International Human Resource Management

This module tackles the issues raised by cross - national differences in HRM styles. It offers an introduction to HRM, identifying a number of key themes: globalisation and the impact of the phenomenon on practice, the relevant challenges to traditional practice and the extent to which change in national systems is evident. Specific issues relating to MNC's, transfer practices, management development, pay and reward, recruitment and selection, are explored.

The Context of International HRM

Discover the impact of globalisation on the harnessing of international human resources. Explore the needs of multinational companies. Discover and interpreting differences between national varieties of capitalism and effects on HRM. Evaluate how national business systems shape MNC HR. Explore the impact of cultures, institutions and managment practices upon HRM. Discern comparative HRM practice in nations, regions and the international context.

International Structure & Strategy in MNC's

Review the importance of strategy and structure through the medium of case studies utilising the following formats: The multinational firm: a decentralized federation. The global firm: a centralized hub. The international firm: a co-ordinated federation. The transnational firm: an integrated network. Examine global integration and the diffusion of HR practices in MNC's including cross border mergers and acquisitions.

The Management of International HRM

Review traditional and contemporary practice in International Management Development. Explore the multifaceted nature of Recruitment and Selection methodologies in a MNC context. Examine the highly contentious debate, issues, facts and practice of International Pay and Reward.

Comtemporary Issues in International HRM

Become aware of International and Comparative Employee Voice and it's importance to organisational sucess. Examine the issues involved in Migration and International HRM and the harnessing of human capital. Explore the idealogy of Outsourcing and International HRM. Review the impact of outsourced workers on firm sucess, strategy, competitive advantage, organisational cohesion and psychological contracts.
