Module Overview

Law and Ethics for Forensics

This module aims to introduce the student to the legal system and the ethical aspects of evidence and the role of the expert witness - Students will understand the progression of the legal process through the court system and the interrelationship with other state actors. The students will be exposed to case studies, mock crime scene visits, evaluation and interpretation practice based on crime scene and forensic scientist reports and course culminating in witnessing a mock court trial.

Introduction to the Legal System

Constitution - Case Law - Court Structure - Appellate Jurisdiction of the Courts - Judicial Review

Roles and Responsibilities in crime scene investigations

Crime Scene Investigation - Gardai - Forensic science Ireland - Director of Public Prosecutions - Witnesses. -Fair Trial - Admissibility - Inadmissibility of certain forms of evidence.

Evedential Issues

Understanding forensic evidence - Interpretation of evidence - Practice presenting direct and cross examination evidence types.

Legal and Ethical Issues

D.N.A. database - Retention of samples - Ethical perspectives - Human rights - Role of the Expert - Observation of Mock Trials - Communication of oral testimony.

Crime scene

Observe mock crime scene and discuss analysis, procedures, management and report formats (technical and evaluative).
