Sports Leadership and Management

Provide an introduction to sports business and management. The module encourage students to develop a critical appreciation of the structure, systems and operation of organizations, the process of management, the behaviour of people at work and the influence of such systems on human behaviour. This course discusses sport management in terms of scope, principles, issues and future trends. This module also examines the job responsibilities and competencies required of in a variety of sports-related contexts and organizations both for profit and non-profit.

Content

With clear reference to organisations operating in the sport industry: Management functions and leadership styles within both large-scale sporting organisations and small units or niche sports. The nature of the relationship of the structure of a sporting organisation, its influence on organisational performance and the people working within it (consider the role of the volunteer within this ecosystem).  The needs and desire of people at work, their drives and motivations, processes involved in identifying and improving motivation. The process of communication, communication flows, channels and barriers within sporting organisations. Groups and their functions, norms, attitudes, leaders, and the impact on behaviour. Different theories of leadership, the qualities of effective leaders and their impact on the employee and volunteer performance within a sporting ecosystem. The application of organisational behaviour and recognition of social processes of the organisation to understand the nature and importance of organizational culture, climate, employee commitment, management of conflict and change. The recognition, development and application of generic problem solving skills and creative thinking to enable problems to be tackled and solutions proffered to a wide range of disciplines.
