The aim of this module is to facilitate the student in becoming competent in laboratory techniques associated with the related modules delivered in semester 4 of the bioanalysis programme (namely Scientific Analysis 2, Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biochemistry).
Scientific Analysis 2: Spectroscopic Techniques
Fundamentals of spectroscopic measurement systems and applications of IR, UV / Vis and AAS spectroscopy to samples.
Pharmaceutical Microbiology
Indicative laboratory practicals include preparation of laboratory media and their sterilisation, assessment of the microbiologial quality of water using various techniques, assessment of the microbiological quality of medicines and the environment, assessment of cleanroom standards.
Biochemistry
Lipid extraction and analysis (TLC and adsorption chromatography); DNS assay for reducing sugars; Extraction of mitochondria and succinate dehydrogenase activity measurement; Protein analysis using Warburg-Christian Assay and the Kjeldahl Method.
