This module will be based on practical laboratory experience. It is intended that this practical module will cover laboratory based topics from modules in forensic analysis, forensic genetics, and organic synthesis. In all practicals, students will be encouraged to develop their ability to integrate the use of various laboratory techniques in problem solving. The concept of team-work, good laboratory practice and the need for both validation and statistical evaluation of results will be emphasized throughout.
Analytical Techniques I
GC analysis of volatile organic compounds.HPLC method development and quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical compounds.Forensic examination of ink and fiber samples by UV/Visible spectroscopy.
Forensic Genetics
Presumptive blood testing of CS samples; DNA extraction and analysis of quality and quantity; STR typing, effect of LCN DNA on typing; Y-STR typing; paternity index determination.
Organic Reactions & Mechanisms
Preparation, isolation and characterisation of organic molecules by multi-step reactions, especially related to drug synthesis.
