This module introduces first year students to communication techniques and the role of engineers in society. There is an emphasis on group work and the module aims to help students in their transition to third-level education and to build good working relationships with their peers, and to build a positive sense of identity as an engineering student within TU Dublin.

Attitudes and expectations. Active listening. Negotiation, Sending and receiving communications. Channels of communication. Non-verbal communication and barriers to communication.

Computing skills
Using standard software (e.g. MS Word and PowerPoint) to create professional reports and presentations.

The Labour Court, Workplace Relations Commission. Health and Safety at Work Act, Unfair Dismissals Act, Employment of Young Persons Act, Part Time Workers Act.
Social and Business
Sources of Irish Law, the Courts.
Ethics
Engineers Ireland Ethical Code of Conduct.
Ethical Use of Technology and data.
Equality Diversity and Inclusion.
Lectures and studios classes each week
The emphasis is on active learning and participation, using group assignments, case studies, class presentations, discussions, and flipped classrooms. Guest speakers may also be invited to present on specific topics.
The tutorial session supports and facilitates the students’ independent learning and project work.
