This module introduces the learner to systems of linear equations, vectors and matrices.

Linear Equations

Introduction to systems of linear equations. Gaussian and Gauss-Jordan elimination.  Homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations. Introduction to matrices and their use in writing linear equations.

Matrix Algebra

Row operations and elementary matrices. Row equivalent matrices. Matrix inverse and its evaluation. Use of matrix inverses in the solution of linear equations. Transpose of a matrix. Symmetric matrices. Diagonal and triangular matrices.

 

Determinants

Cofactors. Properties of determinants. Adjoint matrix and the evaluation of the inverse of a matrix. Cramer’s rule. Non-trivial solutions of homogeneous equations.

Vectors

Vectors in two and three dimensions. Dot and cross products. Components of a vector. Norms. Lines and planes in three dimensions.
