Building on Mathematics I, this module sets out to consolidate and extend the mathematical knowledge and competency of the students. It also introduces topics in probability theory to enable the student to understand the nature of probability as a measure of chance and to solve problems involving uncertainty.
Series. Arithmetic and geometric progressions.
Differentiation. General rule. Derivatives of trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. Function of a function, product and quotient rules. Maximum and minimum values.
Integration. Indefinite and definite integrals. Area under a curve. Mean values. Numerical integration.
Probability. Laws of probability. Binomial and Poisson distributions. The normal distribution.
