This module builds on the calculus and statistics covered in previous modules. The module focuses on vector algebra, differential calculus and statistics. The aim of the module is to introduce the basics of vector algebra, differential calculus and statistics. The module aims to apply mathematics and statistics to the students’ course work in Industrial and Environmental Physics.
Algebra revision
Revision of basic algebra, indices and logarithms.
Vectors
Vector Algebra, unit vectors, scalar and vector products.
Differential Calculus
Basic rules, partial derivatives, geometrical interpretation of partial derivatives, maxima, minima, points of inflection.
Probability
Randomness, independence, addition and multiplication laws.
Probability Models
Binomial, Poisson and Normal distribution.
Hypothesis Testing
