Module Overview

Media, Memory, History

This module will provide an overview of the relationship, in theory and practice, between, media, memory and history. It will concentrate on the history of television in Ireland as a source of key examples, but it also makes reference to international scholarship. Contrary to views that history can be seen as a collection of facts, this module will constantly examine the history of media in a theoretical context. There will an attempt to understand Irish media history in the context of how history is written, and how the relationship between media and society is understood. As such, it will foster a critical engagement with theory and academic sources. Finally, the module will introduce the idea of media as a site of and a source of public and individual memory.
