Module Overview

Advanced Drama Production

Through lectures and technical presentations, students will move from an intermediate film-making skill, to a more advanced level. The module will pay special attention to large sensor interchangeable lens cameras, as used in industry production. The module will expand on camera skills by introducing advanced equipment and techniques such as the use of a dolly for camera movement, and camera jib, slider and gimbal. In addition, a new level of audio and lighting equipment is introduced. The module aims to enhance skills across all areas of production leading to an advanced ability. By the end of the semester, students are required to write, film, edit and present several short films. They work in coordinated groups and on an individual basis to produce solo work as well as team projects. In addition to their technical learning, students will be expected to know a range of logistics skills such as film scheduling.

Introduction to large sensor cinema cameras and lenses, Set building and the safe use of production space. Safe practice using equipment. Casting and working with actors.

Understanding prime lenses.

Students learn the importance of prime lenses, their advantages, how to maintain critical focus, and, the use of filters.

Wireless audio

Using wireless boom on set, and sending a clean audio feed to a boom operator and director.

Sound design

A detailed examination of the use of sound design in enhancing visual imagery.

A number of methods are employed. These are as follows: class-based lectures and tutorial sessions, assembly of sets for filming scenes, creation of screenplays and filming of scripts on a weekly / biweekly basis. This module will be both lecture and workshop based with strong emphasis on practical demonstration and participation. Students will be introduced to advanced cameras and other technology that expands on their previous experience and moves them towards specialisation. Students will work in a television studio space, learning complex industry standard instruments.
