Module Overview

Prototyping Studio

This module focuses on the ability to rapidly conceive, execute, test and iterate on game concepts. In each class the student will be given a design prompt brief. They must devise a game design to this brief and over the coming weeks, create a game prototype.

The following week they must present one of two things:
•    If they are successful with the execution, they present the finished prototype to the class and discuss their process and findings.
•    If the prototype is unsuccessful, they must deliver a post-mortem style presentation on the experience, the reasons for their failure and what they learnt.

Students will make a number of prototypes over the semester and choose one of these to use in order to develop a major project proposal.

The class will consist of a series of games inspired by a set of design prompts and constraints such as:

  • One button
  • Death
  • Relationships
  • Colour blindness
  • Cannot move
  • Failure
  • Monarchy
  • Luxury

After the initial prototyping phase students will select projects to develop further into a major project proposal. This will go through a staff greenlighting process prior to submission.

Each week will see students presenting their games to the class. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A. Following this, there will be a period of play testing and critical feedback.
