Business Development for Sport and Health

The overall aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of the key aspects of Management for Sport and Health. The module will introduce the student to the principles of business management for Sports and Health related fields. The intention is to prepare the student for a future career as a leader in the Sports and/or Health related industries.

Introduction to Business Management

The Role of Management, Planning, Organising, Controlling, Evaluating and Leading, Decision Making and Conflict Resolution. Managing and maintaining quality in Sport and Health.

Sports Business Strategy

Purpose of a business/organisation including vision, aims and values. Strategy, strategic planning and thinking with particular reference to sport management. SWOT analysis, PESTEL analysis.

Financial Management

Valuing sports businesses, financing decisions, sources of finance and funding, Budgeting, financial resources allocation, basic accounting, assessing financial performance, assessing investment opportunities and risk management. Sponsorship in Sport.

Marketing and Public Relations in the Sports Industry

An introduction to marketing (with an emphasis on sport), sports consumer behaviour, the target market, the marketing mix (4/5 P’s), developing marketing plans, achieving customer satisfaction. The role and importance of public relations in sport.

Sports Development

The various models of sports development; the historical context of sports development; the range of issues that impact upon the sports development process such as barriers and constraints to participation, social inclusion, and the benefits and effectiveness of partnerships; the current initiatives and developments at local and national level, and best practice within sports development

Business Plan

Product; organizational background; marketing plan; operational plan; financial plan; risk analysis; decision making criteria.

Workshop

Application of sports/ health development business models

Methods used to achieve the module learning outcomes will include lectures, tutorials, interpretation of data, case studies, problem-solving exercises, video presentations, self-directed learning and computer-based learning
