Module Overview

Performance in Context

Performance in Context provides an active and creative learning environment where students of all streams can develop their skills as performers in a collaborative setting.  The module focuses on students generating practical work while giving due consideration to the broader societal context of music performance practices. This combination is reflected in the curriculum which takes in elements of music theory, arrangement, basic recording, comparative musicology, performance theory and cultural criticism, allowing students to pursue their own development needs as performers and generate original work that is critically reflective and technically accomplished.

The exploration of each topic will involve studying relevant artists and related approaches to stylised creative practice as well as discussions of the broader cultural context of performance practices.

Classes will involve a balance of lectures, presentations, workshops, and student performances. Tutors and peers will offer constructive criticism and advice to students, addressing all aspects of their performance.

Canvas is an integral part of this module – as well as hosting the module overview, the scheme of work and assessment resources, it will also host detailed briefs for projects and various resource materials relating to the module (readings, journal articles `and video recordings of classwork etc.) Students are required to check it regularly.

Where necessary, tutors will organize additional musicians to join the class for the purpose of work-shopping material and performances. Regular formative assessment in the form of both verbal and written feedback will be used to monitor individual students and help them progress.  The emphasis on constructive feedback is intended to help students improve their musicianship, performance skills, critical skills, aesthetic awareness in preparation for summative assessments.

Footage and audio recordings of live class performances will be archived for use as part of each student’s portfolio of work. Each student is expected to engage with the assignments, which will include the submission of audio recordings, videos and written work. These artefacts will be used in the portfolio review assessment in Week 8.  Students will be expected to refer to these submissions in the rationale submitted in relation to each Performance Exam.
