This module aims to provide the student with a knowledge and understanding of the core principles of Sports and Exercise Nutrition. The aim of the module is to examine the classifications, physiological roles and requirements of carbohydrate, protein, fat, fluid and micro-nutrients for those undertaking physical and sporting activity.
Protein and exercise
Effect of exercise, requirements for different athletes, role in performance, excessive intake.
Carbohydrate and exercise
Fatigue, carbohydrate before and during exercise, role in performance, requirements.
Lipids
Adaptation, effects on performance, requirements.
Nutrition and chronic disease
Bone health and osteoperosis, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity.
Female athlete triad/Relative energy deficiency syndrome
Disordered eating, prevalence, etiology, performance and health consequences, nutrition for prevention and management.
Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
Effects of exercise on status, biochemical markers, deficiency and performance, supplementation and performance, risks of supplementation.
Fluid
Requirements, effects of dehydration/euhydration/hyperhydration on performance,
Recovery
Issues in post exercise fuelling, macronutrient recovery guidelines.
Supplements
Pros and cons of supplementation for health and performance, proof and efficacy, doping.
Methods used to achieve the module learning outcomes will include lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, interpretation of data, case studies, problem-solving exercises, video presentations, self-directed learning and computer-based learning
