Professional Studies 2

This module is designed to prepare the students for the workplace and the legal and ethical responsibilities they will face when in practice. The module will provide them with a framework to manage these responsibilities. The module will also prepare the students for supervised practice and inform them on the requirements to complete their supervised practice.

The fitness to practise procedures in Ireland

Examples of cases before fitness to practice in this and other jurisdictions

Reasons for conflict in the workplace and conflict resolution

Reflective and evidence-based practice

Creating and maintaining a CPD portfolio

Preparation for placement including online logbook, peer feedback, etc.

 

The CORU Standards of Proficiency for Optometrists are covered, wholly or in part, in this module within the

following domains 1. Professional Autonomy and Accountability, 2. Communication, Collaborative Practice and

Teamworking, 3. Safety and Quality, 4. Professional Development and 5. Professional Knowledge and Skills.

The learning and teaching methods will comprise of lectures, discussion of case studies with peer feedback, directed and self-directed study. Self-directed study will take the form of the students creating a learning plan for the semester and documenting how they have achieved this goal. They will also need to perform an audit on some of their own clinical records and reflect on how to improve their record keeping. Online resources will be available to the students via Webcourses with supporting references supplied.
