Computer Applications

The aim of the module is to familiarise students with some of the more common computer applications and multimedia packages in use. Through practical exercises, they will gain experience in statistical analysis, computer programming, presentation skills, word processing, manipulation of images, spreadsheet editing and searching the world wide web.

Introduction to Matlab

  • Using the command prompt, variables, performing calculations and simple commands

Computer Programming

  • Devising an algorithm to solve a problem; writing pseudocode.

Writing Scripts in Matlab

  • Writing and running scripts;
  • INPUT and DISP commands;
  • Boolean logic: Boolean algebra, the IF-ELSE command;
  • Recursion: FOR and WHILE loops;
  • Plotting data;
  • File input/output.
  • Performing the manipulation of data in a time-series vector (calculation of mean, variance and standard deviation) and plotting of the data in Matlab. Creation of Graphical User Interfaces and use for input of data.

Using Applications in Science

Microsoft Word (the equation editor, references, footnotes and scientific symbols), Excel (plotting data and fitting a trend line) and Powerpoint (making an oral presentation).

Lectures and tutorials delivered in a computer laboratory.
