This module comprises four components relevant to industry:
Part A
- Statistical Process Control - describes how Statistical Process Control (SPC) is implemented in industry. The theory and justification behind SPC methods will be described together with the decision-making procedures used when SPC is implemented. It will introduce various problem-solving methods used in industry to address process related problems. The techniques associated with experimental design procedures will be emphasised.
- Industrial Measurement - details the key principles of metrological standards and measurement and their, history, use and interrelationships in science and industry.
- Industry Engagement - comprises class visit to industry and/or seminars by industrial figures.
Part B
- Automation - aims to give the learner the skills to acquire data from instruments using a variety of interface types, and to construct programs to acquire and display this information.
*Curricular information is subject to change
Python
Revise Python programming, particularly list manipulation, graphing and spreadsheet access
Data acquisition
Write python code to acquire data from instruments using serial, VISA and ethernet interfaces, depending on the available equipment
Computer vision
Use machine vision libraries to acquire and analyse image and video data using Python
Application building
Create simple GUI applications to wrap around the data acquisition code and display the results
Part B: Primarily based in computer and physics labs, with some lecture support.
