This module aims to provide a foundation in three key areas of Physics (optics, electricity, and modern physics). The module also aims to develop an appreciation for the scope of these areas of specialisation and an awareness of current developments in these fields. Upon successful completion of this module the student will also be able to apply their knowledge of physics to other scientific disciplines.
Electricity
Charge and the forces, energies, and voltages associated with charges;Electrical currents and electrical circuits; Magnetic fields and forces;Electromagnetic induction;
Optics
Refraction and Refractive Index,Geometrical Optics – images, lens, and instruments such as the optical microscope;Physical Optics – interference, diffraction, the spectrometer, resolution, polarisation
Modern Physics - Atomic and Nuclear Physics
Quantised nature of Energy, The structure of the Hydrogen Atom; Emission, Continuous and Absorption Spectra.
Nuclear Physics
Make up of nucleus, nuclear notation. Types of radiation. Nuclear reactions. Nuclear fission. Binding energy and nuclear fusion. Units of radiation. Radiation dose calculations,
