Module aims: To provide students with the skills and knowledge to correctly define and explain process instrumentation performance criteria and principles of operation and to correctly implement configuration and calibration procedures for industrial pressure and temperature instruments.

Instrumentation Terminology and Performance

SI Units. Instrument performance terminology including: accuracy, repeatability, bias, sensitivity, linearity, resolution, turndown. Introduction to transducers and transmitters.

Instrument Transmission Signals and Cabling

Analogue transmission signals for instruments including: 0-20mA, 4-20mA, 0-10V, 1-5V. Input/output calculations and measurements for instruments. Sources and effects of electrical noise on instrument transmission systems. Cabling and grounding techniques for instrumentation and control systems.

Introduction to Calibration

Purpose of calibration. Errors encountered during calibration including: zero, span, linearity, hysteresis errors. Calibration standards and traceability in calibration. Calibration records. Calibration standards bodies. Calibration procedures.

Industrial Pressure Measurement

Pressure formulae and calculations. Pressure units and conversions. Absolute, gauge and differential pressure measurement. Pressure measurement devices including: pressure gauges, pressure switches, pressure transmitters. Configuration of pressure instruments for various applications. Calibration techniques for pressure instruments. Analysis of calibration data and implementation of corrective actions as required. Documentation of calibration data and technical report production. Pressure measurement applications.

Industrial Temperature Measurement

Temperature units and conversions. Temperature measurement devices including: resistance thermometers, thermistors, thermocouples, pyrometers. Temperature measurement installation guidelines and techniques. Configuration of temperature instruments for various applications. Calibration techniques for temperature instruments. Analysis of calibration data and implementation of corrective actions as required. Documentation of calibration data and technical report production. Temperature measurement applications.

Instrumentation Drawings

Instrument flowsheet symbols, instrument tag numbering and letter codes, line symbols for instruments, development and interpretation of piping and instrumentation drawings, standards for piping and instrumentation drawings.
