The single semester Level 7 module aims to provide learners with the experience of participation in a team “design & build” project. This team project is focused around a reasonably well defined “design and build” task which has significant automation/mechatronics content. The module facilitates learners in the integration and application of a range of skills and knowledge in a team environment. The range of technical skills required to be applied in this module (many of which are encountered initially in previous and parallel modules) include cad/cam, mechanical design, electrical/electronic design and manufacture, mechatronics/automation and PLC programming. In addition, students are challenged in this module to creatively integrate and apply both project management and team-working skills; hence a strong link with communications module content). The module prepares learners for the experience of a team based environment they are likely to encounter during work placement and also prepares learners for the skills necessary in subsequent project work.
This module is self-directed learning with no specific syllabus. However, students will draw on learning from various modules in order to support their learning in this module. Students are supported with lectures/tutorials and feedback on technologies, programming, design process, manufacturing methods, report writing/communication and project management to facilitate learners achieve their learning outcomes
Learners are pre-assigned to teams and are then introduced to the team-working environment by way of a 2 hour “design & build” game; designed to encourage engagement and active teamwork while giving learners the opportunity to reflect on important skills and approaches to facilitate successful “design & build” team outcomes.
