Review of Fundamentals

Command Line Interface (CLI) guide. Physical control of a router; serial communications settings, console roll over cable, RS232 - USB, use of virtual machine (VM), PC Configuration settings. Address Resolution Protocol. File transfer protocol. ICMP. Practical implementation of remote login. Review of IPv4 and subnetting.

Layer 2 switching

Introduction to switched networks. Switching concepts. Review of ethernet/IEEE 802.3 frame formats. Switch configuration commands. Ports; access mode and trunk mode. Port Security. VLANs. Frame Tagging and IEEE 802.1Q.

Routing

Packet forwarding in a router. How a router uses a router table. Directly connected vs. remote networks. Static and Dynamic routing. The need for routing protocols.

Routing protocols

Distance Vector Routing. Review of Classless Inter Domain Routing andVariable Length Subnet Masks. Link State Routing and it’s advantages over Distance Vector. RIPv2.
