Introduction to Addictive Behaviours

This module aims to provide students with a theoretical foundation in understanding the different forms of drug and alcohol use. It will also review the wide range of non-substance types of behavioural addictions. It will provide an opportunity to engage with issues concerning definitions of addiction, substance abuse and misuse as well as the impact of problematic drug and alcohol use at an individual and societal level. The social contexts which impact upon substance misuse will also be considered. The properties of the most commonly used psychoactive substances in Ireland will also be reviewed. The module explores the physical, psychological and social components of the addictive cycle.

Defining Addiction

Historical contexts; The role of theoretical frameworks; Overview of major theories and approaches.

Overview of Social Issues in Addiction

Perspectives on drug and alcohol use as well as behavioural dependence in society. Overview of social contexts in the development of substance misuse.

Overview of the most commonly used psychoactive substances in Ireland

Methods of consumption of a range of legal and illegal substances; their effects on the nervous systems; their damaging effects on the body.

Overview of the most prevalent addictive behaviours.

Gambling; internet addictions; pornography; purchasing addictions; food addictions and disorders; obsessive compulsive disorders.
