Irish Culture and Society

This module aims to explain to the learner the main thematic elements that characterise Irish culture and society from the foundation of the Free State to the present day. It will enable the learner to trace the evolution of Ireland as a sociological entity through the study of the main changes in thematic areas within Irish culture and society from the 1920s to the present day. It also aims to have the learner reflect on and discuss the changing nature and increased diversity and inequalities that characterise contemporary Irish society at a national level and at a local community development and youth work level.

A selection of the following themes will be covered.

The focus will be placed on issues pertaining to diversity and equality within each thematic area, particularly in the contemporary era.• A brief introduction to the foundation of the State and government in Ireland• An overview of social institutions in the early decades of the State• The role of the Church/Religion • The Education system • Economic changes• Migration • Gender issues• Diversity related issues in contemporary Irish society
