Substance Use & Addictive Behaviours within Youth Cultures

This course analyses belief systems regarding drug use during adolescence. Rituals and practices regarding alcohol and drug use will be studied within the context of youth development . It explores the concept of addictive behaviour in relation to culture among young people. It also analyses the links between the use of drugs and the socio-economic changes in Ireland. This module aims to provide students with a theoretical foundation in analysing the general concepts of drug prevention.

Alcohol and drug use during adolescence: social perspectives

Facts and figures. Political, cultural, socio-economic and medical influences. Macro-environmental influences: globalisation and mediatisation.Micro-environmental influences: family, school and peers. Substance misuse and consumerism.

Problematic substance use and addictive behaviours

Development of problematic substance use and addictive behaviours among young people: biological and psychological perspectives. Substance misuse and mental health. The concept of comorbidity. Gender-specific issues. Youth development and Identity formation. The "Gateway hypothesis".

The Irish National Alcohol and Drugs Strategy (2017-2025)

Overview of the most common prevention and harm reduction targeting young people, which have been endorsed by the Irish National Alcohol and Drugs Strategy (2017-2025).
