This course analyses belief systems regarding drug use during adolescence. Rituals and practices regarding alcohol and drug use will be studied within the context of youth development . It explores the concept of addictive behaviour in relation to culture among young people. It also analyses the links between the use of drugs and the socio-economic changes in Ireland. This module aims to provide students with a theoretical foundation in analysing the general concepts of drug prevention.

Development of problematic substance use and addictive behaviours among young people: biological and psychological perspectives. Substance misuse and mental health. The concept of comorbidity. Gender-specific issues. Youth development and Identity formation. The "Gateway hypothesis".
